Reverse Osmosis Membrane Separation

Reverse Osmosis uses a partially permeable membrane to separate ions, molecules, salts, and larger particles from the water. It is mostly used in brackish and seawater desalination and requires up to 80 bar pressure to operate.

When used for membrane separation, adequate pressure is applied against feed-water, which pushes out the water molecules through a semipermeable membrane. The feed water is then separated into two compartments- the desired permeate and a higher salinity concentrate (reject) stream. The reject stream is where the ions, molecules, salts and other particles are deposited.
